De-implementing tests and treatments: how Cochrane evidence can support Choosing Wisely campaigns

Background:

Choosing Wisely is a campaign to help clinicians and patients engage in conversations about unnecessary tests and treatments, and make smart and effective care choices. Choosing Wisely campaigns exist in over 20 countries across the world. In many of these countries Cochrane Groups are involved in the Choosing Wiseley work, aiming to bring the evidence to underpin the campaigns. This session will present examples of ongoing collaboration and explore ways in which Cochrane evidence can further underpin recommendations by Choosing Wisely campaigns.

Objectives:

  • To provide an overview of the Choosing Wisely campaigns;
  • To present examples of de-implementation research and work;
  • To discuss opportunities, challenges and strategies for collaboration between Cochrane Groups and national Choosing Wisely campaigns.

Description:

Four short inputs will set the scene for a discussion with the audience on strategies for collaboration between Cochrane Groups and national Choosing Wisely campaigns:

  • Choosing Wisely: update on an international campaign (Angela Coulter)
  • Cochrane New Zealand and Choosing Wisely: example of national level collaboration (Vanessa Jordan)
  • De-implementation research in the Netherlands: opportunities and challenges (Lotty Hooft)
  • De-implementation in a clinical setting: example from Spain (Juan Erviti)
