Abstract

Abstract:

Background:
Cochrane Crowd (http://crowd.cochrane.org) is an online platform that hosts tasks that help identify and describe health research. Anyone can join this collective effort. Since its launch, over 8500 people from 189 countries have joined in. People take part for a range of reasons, with learning being one of the main reasons given. In March 2018, Cochrane Crowd launched a new area within the platform entirely devoted to learning. Here, contributors can access seven micro-training modules. Each module focuses on a single concept considered vital in understanding how to interpret health claims and health research.

Objectives:
This workshop will introduce participants to the Cochrane Crowd platform, with a special focus on this new area within the platform called the Learning Zone.

Description:
The workshop will begin with a brief introduction to Cochrane Crowd and a live demonstration of the platform and the tasks. It will then focus on the Learning Zone modules. In groups, participants will get the chance to go through the seven micro-training modules and will be invited to feed back. We will end the session with a challenge to design a fair comparison for a new (made up) treatment.

Relevance to patients and consumers:

Cochrane Crowd's new Learning Zone area has been designed with patients and consumers in mind. Whilst all tasks within Cochrane Crowd come with training, we were conscious that these tasks still represented a steep learning curve for those completely new to evidence-based medicine and health research generally. The Learning Zone is therefore a space entirely devoted to getting to grips with some of the key concepts (as identified by the Informed Health Choices initiative) such as: treatments can harm, and anecdotes are unreliable. This workshop will focus on introducing this exciting new aspect of Cochrane Crowd.
